You can find a lot different fish species in the sea of Skagerak. Several of them are only to be found in deeper waters, but from Skottevik it is only a few minutes to drive to reach the necessary depth in the waterways.
Different fish types you can catch near Skottevik:
Season: whole year round. Size: up to 200 cm and 79 kg.
Monkfish is one which even professional fishermen used to throw back into the sea. The reason for that is shortly described: it is its horrible look. The big head is half of the total length. You find it near the skerrys or deep down to ca. 600 m depth, together with codfish. In spring it sometimes goes down to 2500 m. This – in former times hated – is today one of the most culinary enjoyments in Norway and is both ways delicious, cooked or grilled.
Halibut is one of the biggest plaice species and is often called the king of fishes. Young fish ist to find in relatively shallow water, but the really big ones you fish only in depth between 300 and 200 m. Unfortunately halibut is one of the endangered species and we all should care about to through back to water the very young or underweight fishes. It is allso regulated by law of the Norwegian Depratment for Fisheries that it is only allowed to take fishes with a minimal size and only use the right equipment. Halibut is a very popular fish for consumption, which you can cook, bake or grill as you like best.
Season: whole year round.
Size: up to 180 cm.
The fish, which got his name from the long looks, lives between 60-1.000 m deep, but you´ll find it often in shallower waters. Normally it is only the very young which come to depth shallower than 100 m. Ling is a good fish to eat, it has white, tastefully flesh and which reminds a little of codfish.
Season: All year.
Size: Up to 130 cm.
Pollack is somewhat similar saithe in appearance, but has a more pronounced under bite. In addition, the bass a dark and arched lateral line, while this is light and almost directly in saithe. Bass live in the so-called open waters (pelagic) down to 200 m deep. Pollack is mostly along the coast, but go further out into deeper water in winter. Pollack is well suited to the everyday diet.
Size: Up to 66 inches, rarely over 40 cm. Mackerel is a (pelagic) fast-swimming fish in summer and autumn, and occurs in large shoals out in the Skagerrak. Mackerel fishing is different because you will have to find the crowd to catch fish. In short, this means that you get lots of fish or nothing. Harp is the perfect tool for mackerel fishing, and we recommend that you run the boat at slow speed while fishing. Mackerel is a very popular food fish in Norway and is traded as fresh and frozen fillets. In Norwegian stores you will also see that there are very many products of mackerel, including hot smoked, cold smoked and pepper smoked mackerel. In addition, there are several varieties of canned mackerel and mackerel in tomato sauce. Fresh Mackerel can be fried, cooked, grilled and fried. Mackerel with sour cream sauce is a very good tip.
Seson: All year
Size: Up to 120 cm.
The Norwegian saithe stock consists of two different strains – north and south of 62 ˚ N. Both stocks remain stable on a good level. Saithe is both pelagic and demersal, from 0 – 300 m deep. Saithe is a schooling fish that can accumulate in large amounts where there is plenty of food. The fish is also suitable for processing and can be fried, grilled and boiled.

Size: Up to 120 cm.
Catfish looks similar to the monkfish, like a fish that has been around since the dinosaurs were on the globe. The concept that says you are what you eat is certainly the case here, where the powerful jaws and teeth are a natural fit for catfish menu, which consists of sea urchins, mussels, snails and crabs. The catfish is today a culinary treat.
Coastal cod: All year
Size: Up to 150 cm.
Cod is one of the most common marine fishes. The cod is mainly prevalent in the North Atlantic and there are two main types: migratory, oceanic cod and the coastal cod. Coastal cod found near Skottevik is a typical bottom fish found from the intertidal zone down to approximately 600 m.
Cod is a very tasty fish and like the salmon the backbone of the Norwegian fix export. «Bacalao» in Portugal had hardly been the same without the quality of Norwegian cod.
The body shape reminds a bit of a ling, but it is more plump and also has only one continuous dorsal fin. Cusk occurs between 50 – 1 000 meters, but is most common between 200- 500 meters. Cusk has a firm flesh and is reminiscent of lobster. A very good fish.
